Nine years into the new millennium and considering the current economic climate, more than ever, small businesses and corporations will face the challenge of how to stay cost affective yet competitive. One thing that has remained steadfast through the last several decades has been the cost of human resources. Not only is it the cost, but frequently how many employees, what kind of employees, and how to maintain and improve the return on the investment in human resources. Businesses large and small have all too often looked at human resources from the point of view of getting the most for the least, which quite frankly has never worked.

The old adage of you get what you pay for and you pay for what you get, is just as true for the people you hire as it is for the products and services you buy! Not only is it important to hire top people, because the better the people you hire the better your company, but equally important; is to be able to maintain and keep the people that you do hire. Hiring an exceptional individual will certainly cost more in time, effort, and salary, but will ultimately be cheaper in the long run if you are able to keep that person for longer than is what normally expected and because of the superior performance and contribution of such an individual.

Big corporations tend to have more resources available to pay higher salaries, and have more flexibility in the creation and formation of the components of a job and may attract better people, because the job and growth would seem more challenging. The fact that these things may be beyond the resources of smaller business and companies, is true in most cases, but not in all. By the same token small businesses may not have the time, money, or resources to consistently be replacing the same employees over and over. It can be a drain on the rest of the staff to pick up the slack until a person is hired. Not to mention detracting time and effort from their own job. Chronic absenteeism as well, sticks out like a sore thumb. To better manage their investment in human resources, a company must first make a good investment in a good employee and then learn how to maintain that employee.

Employee moral, mental health, physical health, self empowerment, are all areas in which the small business owner, as well as corporations, can improve, in order to maintain the wellness of their business. The happier and healthier the employee, the more productive the employee, the better the bottom line. Employee wellness and empowerment programs tend to be more common amongst larger corporations, however, smaller businesses can also take advantage of programs that can be tailored to their specific needs. Sometimes all that is necessary is a small shift in how we think about what we and our employees are capable of achieving. Much like in space travel, a small shift in course can amount to a million miles. Equally, a small shift in how we perceive our employees, our businesses, our bottom line, can result in significant improvement in our businesses and employer-employee relations. It is important not to overlook the need for employee health and wellness, not only physically and psychologically .but emotionally. The small business owner, who may think they do not have the resources to compete with bigger corporations for top talent, may be able to compete on the basis of having better employees from the beginning, through better hiring decisions, and maintaining their employees through learning empowerment, teamwork, better health and wellness.

Remember, the healthier the employee, the healthier the company and vice versa. Perhaps it is time to see you and your company in a whole new light.
